April Opera in Rome, Italy 2013

This April, Teatro dell'Opera, the opera house of Rome, Italy, presents a new highly anticipated opera production, as well as a ballet program of works by acclaimed choreographers.

The month of April opens with the French opera Samson and Delilah, a new production for Teatro dell'Opera with music composed by Camille Saint-Saëns, the composer of ?The Carnival of the Animals and Danse macabre. Charles Dutoit, a conductor from Switzerland, will direct the opera.

Samson and Delilah?is an operatic interpretation of the Old Testament story. It begins in Palestine where the strong Samson fails to rebuff the advances of the seductress Delilah. ?Once she discovers the source of Samson's strength and robs him of his power, he still must call on God's help to destroy his foes.

Set to perform the lead roles are mezzo-soprano Olga Borodina, ?mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk, tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko, baritone Elchin Azizov, and bass baritone Luca Dall'Amico

Also on tap for April opera in Rome is Notes de la Nuit, a program of ballet pieces choreographed by Jerome Robbins, Francesco Nappa and Micha van Hoecke set to music of Chopin, Philip Glass and Luis Bacalov.

Additionally, for lighter opera fare in April, catch a performance of opera selections from composers such as Verdi, Puccini, Rossini and Bizet at Chiesa di S. Paolo Entro le Mura Rome.
