March 20, 2007

Based on Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel, The Phantom of the Opera, is the story of Christine, a young singer who performs at the Paris Opera. A disfigured musical genius masquerades as the “Phantom” to threaten managers of the opera house with catastrophe should they fail to pay him a salary and reserve a box for him at every show. This arrangement ends when two new proprietors take over, leading to a number of unexplained incidents.

Meanwhile, the Phantom has been giving Christine voice lessons, telling her that he is the "Angel of Music," a spirit sent by her dead father. Christine’s talent quickly develops and she is elevated to instant success when she is asked to replace the prima donna Carlotta.

In addition to winning the hearts of the audience, Christine attracts the attention of her childhood sweetheart, Raoul. Jealousy provokes the Phantom to take Christine to the depths of the Opera House. Here, he declares his love for her. But when she discovers his terrible secret, she must decide what love truly is.
