For a museum in Florence that's a little out-of-the-ordinary, visit the costume gallery within Pitti Palace. The costume gallery displays historic clothing from the 1500s, such as the burial clothes of Grand Duke Cosimo I de' Medici as well as theatrical costumes and jewelry.
The costume gallery also features haute couture designs from Paul Poiret and Valentino to Yves Saint Laurent. At one time, a costume worn by pop icon Madonna was also on display. Exhibits of historic and more contemporary pieces are rotated frequently to preserve the delicate fabrics.
Palazzo Pitti is located a short walk from the Ponte Vecchio. This original residence of Florentine banker Luca Pitti dates from the 15th century. Decades after his death, the Medici family later purchased it. Today, the palace houses treasures, such as artwork and furniture, from centuries of Medici rule.
